GASP Groups Against Stadium Proposals fights destruction of Historical Air Park

Groups Against The Stadium Proposals (GASP) was formally formed on Monday 15th November 2010 when concerned representatives of independent groups representing some 13,000 residents came together to unite against the stadium proposals by Wycombe District Council and private enterprise. Groups include parish councils, residents' associations, sports clubs and conservation bodies from both the local and wider area.

Whilst each group has its own individual concerns, many are shared by all groups, including loss of countryside in the Green belt at Wycombe Air Park, Booker (also referred to as Booker airfield), concerns about access to and from the proposed stadium and housing development and the highly questionable finances of the venture.

What are the stadium proposals?

There are no plans to look at as yet, and all the proposals coming from Wycombe District Council and the sports clubs’ development company WSDL are so puffed up with hype that it is impossible to distinguish the reality from the hot air. For instance Wycombe District Council’s ‘wish-list’ of facilities could not physically fit on the Booker site.

The facts, however, are these:
  • The council will use 240 acres of our green belt land to build its stadium
  • It will sell off Green Belt land to build many hundreds of houses to fund its stadium
  • It will build housing for a population twice the size of Marlow Bottom in half its space
  • It will use your valued assets to fund commercial expansion
  • £416,000 of your money has already been spent on feasibility planning and a flawed public consultation
  • The council chose to ignore its own scrutiny committee which stated that Adams Park can be redeveloped at a fraction of the cost of Booker
  • Thousands more cars will be using our roads, affecting Wycombe, Handy Cross, A404 etc
  • Many of our local sports facilities will be forced to close
  • Our football team with an average attendance of 4,170 will play in an empty stadium (min 17,500 seats)
